■Reference to the honour recently bestowed by the. King on the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. .1. P. Luke) was niado at last evening's meeting of the Wellington City Council. Councillor W. H. P. Burlier, on behalf of the council, congratulated His Worship, and said that Mr. Luke had been culled on to discharge many important duties other than tlioso usually falling to a Mayor. Mr. Luke and also Mrs. Luke bad devoted_ great energy and ability to'working in tho interests of the war. Tho only regret the council had was that tlio honour listened on tho Mayor did not carry with it a distinction .which Mrs. Luke could shore. .Mrs. Lnko had done wonderful work, and displayed remarkable organising ability. However, he hoped additional honour would yet be bestowed on Tfis Worship. Councillors G. Frost and W. T. Hildreth also spoke. Mr. Luke thanked tho council. He said that he. took tho honour not as a personal one, but one for the people of Wellington. There was a desire on the part of tho people to do all they could to help to win and ond the war as soon as possible, and great work had been done by the women of tho city, but for whom many a homo would have been more dreary than it is. Colonel 11. It. Potter, C.M.G.. Commandant at Trentiiam Camp, lias received a letter from the Clrev Patriotic Association, congratulating him upon the distinction recently conferred upon him by tho King. In the course of his letter Ihe chairman of tho committee, Mr. J. I). Lynch, stated that "tho boys from this district have always received at your hands kindly and sympathetic courtesy, and it therefore ononis us keen satfsfaclion to see your name in tho list of honours,"

The death of Lieutenant-Colonel T. Hope Lewis, Now Zealand Medical Corps, was duo to heart trouble. Deceased was staying; <it the Northern Club, Auckland, and left word on. Mondav night that ho was to be called at 7" o'clock next morning. lie died in bis sleep. His only son is on active sen-ice, and his only daughter is Mrs. Guy Williams, of To I'arae, Mnsterton.

News lias been received in Wellington that Sergeant A. A. ii. Tegncr, of Wellington, who went away with tho Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, aud who was invalided back to New Zealand after tho Gallipoli campaign, has been granted a commission in tho Indian Army Itescrve of Officers. lie is now stationed at Quetta.

Last evening's meeting of the Wellington Patriotic. Society's Executive carried a vote of condolence with the relatives of Captain S. A. Atkinson, who was killed in action in France.

News has just been received that Lieutenant Arthur L. Flux was wounded on Juno 7. This is the second wound ho has received within a month. The first one must have been slight, as ho rejoined his unit within 14 days. Lieutenant Flux is tho elder son of Mr. George Flux, lately headmaster of South Wellington School.

The Mayor made reference at the City Council last evening to the death of Conductor Bnrborongh, of the city tramways. Air. Lnke said that the Late conductor was a returned soldier, and a man of very cheery disposition. Tho council decided to send a letter of sympathy to Conductor Burborough's family.

Mr. Alva Shaw, of the firm of Messrs. Wilson and Shaw, leaves shortly on a business visit to Melbourne and bydney.
