Oil TCSIS. Tlioro aro two -ways to test oil. Ono is gradually to heat a bottle of oil until u. yellow vapour arises on tlio surface, maintain this heat about fifteen minntee, then let the oil stand about twenty-four hours. If the oil is of good quality it will only turn a little darker than originally,' but if it is not of good quality it will turn black, and a certain amount of black sediment will bo seen. This is exactly what happens if such oil is used in tho eugino. Another test is to take an equal quantity of oil and water, and shako them togother in u, bottlo for about thirty minutes. After standing for twenty-four hours the food oil will rise to the top of tho water, showing a clear lino of separation. A poor oil will havo a considerable strip o fwhito fluid between tho oil and tho water, and if tho oil is o£ a poor grade most of tho lluid will become this whitish substance. This test is important, becauso a slight amount of water might become mixed with any oil, and tho oil ehould be of good enough quality to prevent serious damage under these circumstances. Safety Mirrors. Mirrors are now largely used in tlio United States to minimiso tho dangers which arise at dangerous crossings and acute roild angles, in the Eastern States these mirrors,, which aro of largo size, and aro inado'of plate-glass stoutly reinforced, are v generally used where a. branch road breaks into a main highway on a turn approaching a right angle. A heavily protected mirror is placed at such an angle at the sido of - the road that a driver travelling, for instance, south, oau observe a, car or other vehicle approaching from the west in time to avoid all possibility of collision or loss of time. Here and There. It is very doubtful if si satisfactory substitute for the rubber, fabric, and air now used in tyres on pleasure automobiles or for tho tyres themselves, will be found for some time to como, if over, declares an American tyro manufacturer. "While tho United States Patent Office will continue, to receivo hundreds of applications for new inventions to tako tho place of tho ).-rcBent pneumatic none seem to achieve more than passing notice among tho motoring public. While tho different brands of tyres now on tho markot differ as to quality and many hove distinctive characteristics, every make . that is tho least bit successful embodies tho _ basic principle of rubber, cotton, and. air. I do not believe thero will ever be a satisfactory substitute for rubber. Of course, constant research and experimentation will bring about tho improvements in tho tyro industry, but not since tho pneumatic tyro was originated somo twenty years ago has the principle of rubber, fabric, and air changed." When washing tho car use a hose with a. slow running stream of water. Lot the Water soak in well before sponging or wiping off, using plenty of water. Never uso hot water. Leather upholstery may bo mado to look brighter if it is treated with linseed oil. A small quantity of tho oil is placed on a piece of dean cheesecloth, and tho surfaces gently wiped. This should bo done only after tho dust has been removed from tho surfacos. According to & dispatch from London, a motor-car which was built in Germany for tho personal uso of Emperor William, and Which had been sent to London just before tho war to be fitted with an English body, has just been sold for £50C0 to a Danish shipowner. Tho car has been in tho hands of the body builders ever sinco it was finished. Lighting-up timo:-To-dtty, 4.27 p.m.; next Friday, 1.28 p.m.
