CRIPPLED SOLDIERS' HOSTEL
Sir,—The ladies of tho Patriotic Society (Hutt branch) ore in some doubt whether the Wellington Patriotic Society intends to promote a carnival similar to ' that, held two years ago. Wo hear ono day that the project has been abandoned and the next day somo other scheme or a variation of the samo will bo launched upon the public. The president of the Wi.P.S. has not publicly announced tho abandonment of the carnival. At a meeting of tho Patriotic Committee held in Hr.tt on Mav 31. it was unanimously decided lo lodgo an emphatic protest against the proposed carnival. The Hutt ladies havo dono their share and are willing to do more still for the healing and comfort of the soldiers whether leaving or returning, but thoy wish to do so along lines consistent with dignity and sellrespect. It is degrading lo tUe manhood and womanhood of tho Dominion oven to hint that money will not be forthcoming unless an appeal is mado to all that is most thoughtless and frivolous in the constitution of human nature. Wo offer to make a special appeal through our guild and patriotic shop for the Crippled Soldiers' Hostel Fund. Last year a considerable sum was raised for the Bed Cross Fund in this way, and tho residents of tho valley havo never yet failed to respond to any special coll. We _fecl sure tbat if each local; guild committee or patriotic shop wore to adopt some such plan, tho mouev would bo procured with greater ease and satisfaction to all concerned.—Tours, etc.. AGNES F. M'CAW. ' •n T „v.,w. Honj President, E. LOUISA STUART FORBES. Hon. Secretarr. •. . . Hutt Patriotic Guild. ■Lovrer Hutt, June 11, 1917.
