COUNTY , COUNCIL MEETING,
\ ■ Tho ordinary meting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday. Councillor J. Wakoham presided, end there- ivero also present Councillors W. Ualloway, W. J. ilowcll, J. Whiteman, T. Edwards, M. W. Welch.
Tho inspector of works reported that tho Alungakotukutuku Bridge had been completed on Juno 6, and had been inspected" by the Public . Works Department. Tho Trcntham rango road culvert had also been mado and inspected, and the Public works inspector had expressed approval or uio manner in which tho work had been dono. A wooden culvert on tho Akatarawa Eeid had. been replaced with concreto pipes, and pipes were also to bo placed in a. culvert on the Wbiteman's Valley Itoad. Decking had been renewed , on various bridgos in tho county. The recent rain had caused a number of small slips, and the northern pier of tho Deep Creek Bridge had been undermined. One thousand six hundred and eighty feet of timber had been ordered for further repairs at I'ahautanni Bridge, and the piledriving plant was ready. The crushingPlant was working at Plinracrton. Owing to tho scarcity of labour and carts, slow work was being dono at metalling tho Main lioad in Epuni and Jlangaroa- liidIngs, but the best, was being done under the circumstances.
'ITie debit balance at the bank was reported, to bo £6617 9s. Id. A letter was received from the Defence Department regarding the state of tho road between Wellington and Trcntham. line council decided to do all in its power to remedy any bad parts of the road. A circular from tho Manakau County Council regarding e, proposal to amend the Land Drainage Act to allow councils to force private people to dear natural watercourses of -willows, etc., was "received," as the councils haTe already power to do this.
Mr. E. Riddiford wrote concerning tho bad state of the Orongoronpfo Hoad, and thecoimcit decided.to effect some neressary repairs.
In connection with the need of fences on the Paelrakariki Hill at some of tho dangerous places, the Wellington Automobile Club wrote to tho council. The matter was loft in tho hands of the councillor for tho riding and tho engineer to hare something done.
