LOCAL TO UIINAMEjYi'S AND MATCHES. According to southern exchanges the Canterbury Chess Club ■ has decided to challenge the ..Wellington Club to play tho annual telegraphic match on Uie last two Saturdays of this month. The' Wellington Club will, it is understood, arrange the necessary preliminaries at noxt Saturday's committee meeting. The question of holding an open night in July for tho playing of a "territorial" match, North v. South, will also come up for consideration. This contest, which was,abandoned last year on account of the serious illness of the then president, Mr. Fell, should prove of exceptional interest. It is expected that over 100 enthusiasts can be got together for the occasion, and that difficulties as regards getting a suitable room and tho uso of sufficient material can bo overcome.

Entries are coming freely for tho club's annual "Petherick" tourney. Entries for the annual handicap tourneys of tho Working Men's Club closed on' Saturday evening. Nineteen names fcavo been handed in for tho chess tonriioy ajid seventeen for tho draaglits tourney, which,; as in former years, is a eoaled handicap event. There is, however, a new feature, as the four highest scorers are to; play off for the clu.b championship on the, two-life knock-out syßtem (balloted openings). The increase in the number of entries will necessitate the purchase of additional chess material, which is receiving attention. The projected telegraphic match against the Timaru Draughts Club has been abandoned/as the use of a v'ire cannot be arranged for. The annual handicap tcurna.v <f tho Wellington Sou.th Chess Club is scheduled to commence on Thursday evening. There are 15 entries, which is vcrj".gratifying, seeing that the.e are less than two dozen names on the activo roll.

Good progress is being , made In tho Jfgaio Club's tourney, in six rounds have been played. Messrs. Wrooker, Topp, Lindsay, and E. E. Hicks have each lost two games, from which it will readily be :-een that tho club's top-iiotclicrs are, meeting, with "obstruction." Mr. Westbrooke, on tho other hand,- is at present unbeaten, but lie has only played tlire-j games, mi (hat ho has many opportunities ot' meeting with disaster.

The Ngnio Club presi-nted their former hon. treasurer, 51 r. T>. W. Banks, with' a work'on chess o.i (lie occasion of his leaving tho district .to reside in Wellington as ii small token of personal esteem, and also of appreciation of 1 allied services in looking lifter the club's financial welfare.
