RUSSIA'S ORDEAL
GLOOMY DISPATCHES FROM PETOGRAD
DISSATISFACTION OVER WAR
AIMS
U-BOAT WARFARE COLLAPSING
ABANDONMENT REPORTED LIKELY
The situation in Russia is the subject of a series of gloomy dispatches to-day. In these it is pointed out that the Russian Avmy transport services a.ra disorganised, spies are everywhere, and the Government is unable to cope with them. There is a. feeling in the Army and amongst: those' who represent the Army at Petrogj-ad that the Allies' troops have had better treatment than tho Russians; they have been exposod to lew hardship, and so on, all of which leads up to the suggestion that as Russia is fighting for somewhat different aims (so it is contended) than are Britain, and France, the sooner he hardships of the Aimy and the carnage on the battlefields is ended tho better. The position now is, according to correspondents, that Russia is awaiting a definite yes-or-no statement oi the question of the coincidence of Russia's and the Allies' war aims. On the Italian front progress has been maintained, and the British monitors attacking the enemy in rear bare resumed their bombardment. The Rome correspondent of tho Paris "Journal" states that the Austriansare evacuating Trieste. Good news concerning tho submarine war is contained in a report that Germany, discouraged by recent losses of U-boats.and the new British anti-submarine measures, will probably abandon her pirate campaign at the end of the summer. The weekly summary of vessels attacked and sunk or successfully attacked shows a further decrease. Only one vessel under 2600 tons has been sunk. Of those over, the number is the same as last week.,.'
