WANGANW MEETING MARTON WINS BIG STEEPLE CHASE.

By Correspondent,

~.,. Wanoanui, May 26. J .'iio Wanganui Racing Club's tsccond day's racing was held, in cold weather, heavy showers falling. Thorowas a largo crowd, and Uio totalizator handled. X 27,aii tor tho day; a« against £29,260 last year, making a total of J;54,323 for tho meeting, against ,£51,030 last year. Tho Winter Oats was » good betting v?' , i ! ll ,.' ho sartors being well backed.lolentiality finished up favourite, but (hero was nol; much margin between, her and Lady General. Ar was anticipated, the weight (old on tho latter, and though ridden in behind fihe couUl not. get to Iho front a t the concluding stages. Bivouao was tho firsl; to become prominent, and he led down tho back from Ladv General and Inah, At the two furlongs Interlude moved u.p, but was done with at the straight entrance, where Chakwana and Potentiality came through. Ihe favourite wore the mare down and won. nicely, whilo Veto, who finished fast, was third, and then c-ame Toro loro, who was again 6low to move. Carraol Arch was withdrawn from tho Balgownio Hack Handicap, leaving nine, runners. The investing public went heavily for Johnny Walker, and the big fellow pulled them through after an interesting race. 01. the start Rio and Crown Head wunt out in front, and had a good break passing the six furlongs. Down the back. Reed moved up on the favourite, and entering tho-straight ho rati up to Rio. Tho pair wero under pressure in (lie run home, but tho big gelding acted tho better, and ran past the post, a winner by a length. Hexton was close up third, and then came Henry Clay.

Cyronus, Nita, and Styrax wore preferred in (hat order in tho big Steeplechase, which again resulted in a very fino contest, but was spoilt by accidents to Czaronus and Styrax early in the race. At the first fenco Styrax fell and brought Silver Monarch down, while most of the others got, mixed up with the fallen horses. Entering the straight Grey Guard \<rns showing out from Jackman and Nita. At the stand double Czaronus came down. Tho throe leaders and Hereford continued on, and the jumping was now excellent. Tho positions ■were unchanged till the last mile, where Marton moved up, and he, Nita, and MTJonald were together down tho back. MTJonald spelled Marton at tho halfmile, and Nita led info the straight, but at the last fence Marton had her, and in a good finish won by a couple of lengths. Nita was ridden to beat. Jackman, and (hen came Grey Guard, St. Elmn, and Hereford. Arlington was tailed off last.

Otter and Son were the only withdrawals from the Eata Haoft Hurdles. Colorado was a better favourite than the bracketed pair. At tho start the two latter made the running, but at the first feiice Montana was nearly down and lost a lot. of ground. Passing tho stand tho first time Precious Metal, Kohinahina and Waioture lvvro tho leaders, with Combustion and Colorado handy. Down the back Waioture and Combustion were in charge from Colorado and Kohinahina. Bounding thebond the latter took charge, and ran in an easy winner from Waioture. Montana ran past a lot of beaten horses and got third place. Yarilla was the next to finish.

What a good horse Bon Eeve is he proved by carrying list. 21b. in the May Hurdles and winning comfortably. He, Leonta, and Sir Fisher ran away from the field in the last quarter, and the top weight, who jumped perfectly throughout, won well. . His owner may ibe considered most unfortunate in missing the payment for the Great Northern Hurdles, in which he was in with lOst. 41b. He is certainly the best hurdle horso in commission in the Dominion to-day. At the start Mahzoltov and Otter led the field, but the latter fell on the flat at the back of the course, and his rider, S. Henderson, was badly kicked by other horses. Sir Ksher dashed out at the half mile, but Leonta soon had him, while Bon Eeve move<l up fast. In the straight, he took charge and won as described.

Throo horses wero evenly hacked in the Empire Handicap. These wero Gang Awa', Kauri King, and Cherry Blossom, and after a fine finish between tho two first-named the Foxton-owned horse got tho verdict by a nose. Kami King ran a good race, but the winner would have been unlucky to have lost, as ho got badly stopped going out of the straight the first time. Cherry Blossom was prominent for three furlongs, when Kauri King took chargo and led into the .straight. HeTe ho was challenged by Gang Awa',' and after a great struggle the verdict went to tho favourite. Lady Middleton was a-poor third, and Detroit finished next.

The track conditions were very bad by tho titno the last race. came. Mr. W. Duncan started two horses, Pohehe and Endure, and the bracketed pair carried most support, though several of the runners wero well backed. At the start Pohehe shot;out, and led to the home bend, where "White Ranger joined him. A little further on Endure carao from behind, and in the straight he prevailed

over the other pair, winning comfortably. Whilo Ranger beat Polieho by a neck, DETAILED RESULTS, By Telegraph.—Press .Association. WINTER OATS HANDICAP.
