Whangarei, May 26. During a. heavy thunaorstorm . yesterjrlay afternoon, a Maori, fifty years of age, aamed M,atthew Harawera, engaged on load work at Akerama, twenty miles jtiorth of-Whangarei, was killed/ Ho took .6helter under a kahikatea tree, and was struck instantly dead by lightning. Ho tleaves a widow.

Deceased was a married man, hnd resided with his family in Pallisor (Road, Eosencath. Evidence given.--on Saturday showed that about 10.20 p.m. ion Friday a youth in the employ of the [Union Company 'was' returning to his ship along Jervois Quay when ho heard a splash. Seeing that a man had fallen jinto the water, he got a lifebuoy and icalled for help. Ho threw the lifebuoy, (but Dunn failed to grasp it and was drowned. Deceased was about 4S years of' age, aid was employed as a. coal {worker. The inquiryiwas adjourned lill j* p.m. to-day.
