Sir,—There is a refinement in the usa of the word "loaned" that roused ire of your correspondent I)\ V. Waters,* The subtle distinction between "loaned'' and "lent" exactly tits the case. "Loan" implies security tor what is lent—hence it is correct to say that Captain Evans was loaned to the U.S.A., because we took as security a flotilla of torpedo boats plus an American admiral.—l am, etc., BELLICOSE.
