CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COM MERCE
A meeting of the Council of- the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday. Mr; A. Leigh Hunt presided, and there were also presentMessrs. L. Nelson, W. J.GaudinTw b' Bennett, S. H. Horner, J. P. itkin °W Smith, H. Sogers, and T Forsyth. ' Mr. A. Leigh Hunt moved, in accordance with notice . given: "That the chamber join the Forestry League" Hβ said that he hoped the motion would not be opposed on the ground that the present might not be deemed an opportune time to enter upon, forestry enterprises. It was probable that nothin" would be done .during the war period, but he behaved it was the policy of the chamber to prepare for the end of the war, and to have everything in readiness for action when the moment for action should arrive- This policy he personally approved, and h« commended tho motion and the objects of the Forestry Leagiie to the favourable consideration of the meeting. The main objects of the league were to conserve our existing native bush, to encourage tho planting ol waste Crown lands, to encourage private owners to plant their lands with trees,, and generally to impress upon the Government the fact that .afforestation and the preservation of standing timber was a matter of national moment to the country.
Mr. W: Smith seconded the motion, but be expressed some doubt as to whether the league would do much good, seeing that .the Government had had the matter before it for many .years. The motion was carried.
