FIRE IN THE CITY
BLAZE IN WAKEFIELD STREET. \ At 9.55 o'clock last evening the Fire Brigade received a call, to 108 Wakefield Street, where a quantity of general merchandise on the ground floor had caught fire. Messrs. Fulton and Co., general merchants, were the occupiers of the floor, and a greater portion of their stock was destroyed belore the lire was put out. The building -was a threestoryed brick warehouse, and the other floors were occupied by Messrs. G. W. Guthrie and Coi, leather merchants, and the Now Zealand Acetyleno Gas Lighting- Co., Ltd. The firo originated in somo cases of rubbish, and soon spread to the other contents of the room and to the -walls, which were badly damaged. The firo was kspt on the first floor, and the damage to the upper, parts of the building and to its contents was not g The stock and fittings of Messrs. Fulton and Co. weroinsuied for .£350 in the Phoenix Office and for .£7OO with the Standard Insurance Company. Ine building is owned Guthrie, Bowden and Co., of Dunedin, and the amount for which it is insured was not known.
