£350 DAMAGES FOR. SLANDER.. By Telegraph.—Press Association. New Plymouth, May 16. At the Supreme Court sittings held hero to-day, William James Jones was acquitted on a charge of indecent assault on a Maori girl at Waitara. In the slander action in which May Sel'ton. sought to recover £760 damages from Lowry Baskin for defamatory statements made by him at a meeting of the Stratford County Council, the jury awarded plaintiff £350. Three divorce actions were dealt with. Each one was on the wife's petition. In the defended case of Mary M'Xab v. David M'Nab, the jury decided tliat the defendant was not guilty of habitual drunkenness and habitual cruelty. The petition was dismissed. The other two 'cases, Euphemia Clarke v. James Clarke and Julia .Heather v. Arthur Heather, were unopposed, and decresa nisi were granted.
