HOW AN AUSTRALIAN WON THE V.C. London, Slav 11. Tho Press Bureau reports: Tho Victoria Cross has been awarded posthumously to Captain P. H. Cherry, a,n Australian officer, for his bravery and determination, leadership in command of a company detailed to storm and clear a village All the officers of tho company were casualtied, but Captain Cherry earned ou with determination in tho face of fierco opiwsitioii, and cleared the onemy out or tho village. He frequently ieported progress. When held up by the enemy at a strong point he organised machine-guns and a bombing party, and captured tho position, setting a wonderful example to his men. Ho next took charge of beating off resolute and most heavy counter-attacks. When wounded, early in tho morning, ho refused to leave his post, and encouraged his men until this very gallant officer was killed in the evening by a shell. Sir Thomas Robinson, -who has returned from Franco, where he took tho poll of the Queensland troops on the referendum on tho abolition of tho Legislative Council, said that some divisions in which the Queouslanders predominate are- now in i\\i thick of the fighting. When Sir T. Robinson arrived'in camp von Hir.donburg was delivering a great and unsuccessful counter-attack upon tho trenches which' tho Australians had captured.
