An interesting sale has just been completed in Wellington whereby the small steamer Huia (127 tons) has changed hands, from the Wellington and WanganuHSteam Paokct Company to Mr.. W. H. Brewer. Inquiries made by a Dominion reporter yesterday elicited some interesting details. The Hiiia hag been laid up in the stream at Wellington for a considerable period, and was recently submitted for sale by auction, but ,only drew bids amounting to £30. Needless to say, she -was not sold. The price sho did change hands at was not high, but tliis is explained by the I fact that for tho size of the vessel she has ! a -amall-, careo-carrying capacity—only about 130 tons. A suggestion was made . that the new owner would, "scrap" tho vessel, but Mr. Brewer scouts this idea, as absolutely without foundation. As a matter of fact at the present time there is a gang of men -working on the vessel getting her into order, and on Friday she is to go oa the slip. Recently the Huia, was inspected, and. it is reported that for the age of the vessel and the time she I has been lyluc idle in Wellington her en- \ gines and fittings are in a wonderful state | of preservation. It remains to he seen I in what state the hull is in when she is put on the slip. . Besides cleaning up the vessel and putting her into order for running in whatever service she enters, some extensive alterations are being made. At the present time the Huia has accommodation for somu thirteen passengeTs, and the owner has hit 011 the idea of removing this accommodation and utili«ing tho spaco for carrying cargo. This will increase the Huia's cargo-carrying capacity by about 20 tolls, and will give her a total capacity of some 150 tons. The Huia is an iron screw steamer, built in 1878 by R. H. Yeoman at Auckland, and her engines are by Me.sefie.ld and Co., Auckland. Her principal dimensions arn 127 tons cross, 69 tons net, length 113 ft. 2in., beam 16ft., depth Bft. 7in. The vessel was for several years a regular and useful trader between Wellington and Wanganui, and her local agents were Messrs. Johnstolir and Co. Details regarding her new agents and also the service she is to enter should be available in about a fortnight. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP.. Mr. S Thorns, second mate of the Orepuki, has come ashore, and Mr. T. Lyons has joined tho vessel. Mr. E. S. Hood has joined the Pateena as purser. ' Mr. a. M. Brown has joined the Ta-ra-Mr. E. V. Dickey has joined the Pateenaas purser. Mx. 0. Andwson. third officer of tho Mararoa, has come ashoro. Mr. H. 11. Frith, second engineer of tho Knrow, has come ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. M. J. M'Conville. Captain Gibson has ■ rejoined the Kapuni. Mr. Crotty has reverted to tho position of mate, and Mr. P. 0. Williams has come ashore. Messrs. Cathie, Dempster, and Co. adviso that the Wootton was to leave Kaikoura last night for Wanganui. and wilt also make another trip when this one is completed. She. is not expected here for uome time. Tho lieguhie is due here on Saturday from Wanganni. and is fixed to sail the same day for Nelson and the West Coast. The Wairau arrived here last night from Blenheim, where she has been laid up for some considerable time. She goes on the slip here, and on Friday will probably take up her ordinary running in the Wellington-Blenheim trade, .'
