BOROUGH OF ONSLOW

Mr. ,1. M. Dale, the newly-elected Mayor of Onslow, was formally installed. .in officc yesterday with tho good wishos of the retiring Mayor and the incoming council. Mr. C. C. Crump, the retiring Mayor, congratulated Mr. Dale and .the now councillors on their ejection. .Referring to tho work ahead of tho council, ho said that he did' not. suppose that.any very important undertakings would be possible until after tho war. and for thin reason, as well as for others more woighty, ho hoped that the.ro might soon be a cessation of hostilities. Tie was 'pleased that the Mayor and his council wero all in favour of going on with a schemo of water and drainage for tlio borough. His own personal opinion was that no scheme that could he devised would be superior to tho catchment area scheme, which had been before tho electors. He hoped that tlio good work of the last oouiicil would ho continued hy tho new council, and especially that a. central station would bo obtained for the district. He was glad to bo able to say that the finances of the council were in a highly satisfactory state, that, in fact, the finances of tho borough had never beon in a hotter position. Mr. Dalo formally installed in tho chair of office, and ho then received the congratulations of tho councillors. Several of the speakers took advantage of the opportunity to refer to tho good work of tho retiring Mayor and councillors.

In ackuwiedging tho congratulations offered to him, Mr. Dale said that tho point most to bo stressed was that they wero all out for the progress of tho borough. Ho took it that tho new council had been elected on tho amalgamation issue, to support amalgamation as against tlio catchment, area, wator scheme. Ho thought, it should 1 bo tho duty of tho coutfcil to collect all available information about amalgamation.

It was decided to set up a committee. charged with tlio spccial duty of collecting information on tho amalgamation proposal, and Councillors Budd, Appleton, and Bowdcn were elected to bo the committee.
