EASTBOURNE INSTALLATION
.At noon yesterday at the Eastbourne Borough Council's offico tho new councillors, tho cx-councillors, tho retiring Mayor, and the Mayor-elect assembled for the Mayoral installation ceremony.
Mr. J. P. Kelly, tlio retiring Mayor, presided, and after' swearing in the new councillors, said that ho was sure, handing over tho 6eals of offico to tho now Mayor (Mr. P. Levi), that the latter would carry out his duties faith-
fully, and administer the, affairs and finances of life borough prudently. Before vacating the chair, Mr. Kelly made a brief valedictory speech, in which ho said that without wishing to he. egotistical be, thought he conkl claim that, bo had left the. borough ai--I'airs in a bettor position than ivheii ho took office. He quoted figures in support of his statempnt, and thanked tho members of tho old council, ilso tho borough staff for their loyal and consistent, support. Mr. P. Levi was then sworn in as Mayor, and look the chair, hi a brief address, he said he would have much preferred to have seen Mr. Kelly again in office. Ho did riot, seek flic-posi-tion, but since bo had he.en elected Mayor bo would do his utmost to lurtlier the interests of the borough. Nrt doubt Eastbourne had gone, ahead during the past l.wo years notwithstanding the war, and he hoped it would continue to do so. Tho question of tho ferry sei'vico, he thought, was likely to he a difficult one, and it might be. necessary lo again restrict, the service. The borough might, in the national inforest, bo compolJod to conservo fuel, irrespective of any strike, that might occur., After tho ceremony the health of the new Mayor and council was toasted, and specohes were made.
