THEFT FROM HOTELS ALLEGED. Mr. \V. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at tlio Magistrate's Court yesterday. • A plea of guilty was entered by Eelward. Alfred Walsh, who was charged ivith tho tiioft 011 October 9, 1916, of £S 14s. 6d. and two gold rings, of the total valuo of £14 4s. 6d., from tho Masonic Hotel, Wellington, the property of Mary Drummond. Chief-Dctectivo Boddam prosecuted. According to tho evidonc© of two waitrossos and a barmaid employed at the hotel, the accused and another man wore seen in tho upstairs portion of tho building. Neither of them was a boarder. Tho money and tlio rings wore, missed immediately afterwards. Tho accused was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. Walsh was further charged with stealing on October 3, 1916, from the Masonic Hotel, Palmerston North, one gold watch chain and a sovereign caso, valued at £12, the proporty of James Cornish. On this clmrgo lie was remanded to Palmerston North for trial. THEFT OF PETROL. James MaToma, a half-caste Maori lad, pleaded guilty to the theft of ono tin of petrol, of tho valuo of 10s., tho proporty of Nellie Nightingale. Tho theft took placo on Monday last. At tho request of Chief-Detectivo Boduam sentence was doforred for a week in order that further inquiries may bo . made. ■ Josoph Nicholls and John M Carthy, charged with breaking and entering a warehouse on/ April 18 and stealing therefrom a quantity of E.P. ware, or tlio value of £84 Bs., wore further renumded for a week, bail being fixed at £100, and ono surety of £100 in cachcaso. OTHER CASES. J Bryda Sheehan was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for loitering in <a public street for immoral purposes, contrary to the War Regulations. For insobrioty Goorgo Brailey was fined 10s., in the alternative twentyfour hours' imprisonment. James Burko was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for resisting a constablo ho was fined 205., tlio alternative being soven days' imprisonment. Four first-offending inebriates wore treated in the usual manner. John Lavigiie, a seafaring man, was charged that on April 30 he attempted to commit a serious oflonce oil a boy. Accused was committed to the Supremo Court for trial. On a further charge of being drunk, Lavigno was fined 10s., in default twenty-four hourß in gaol.
