CHRISTCHURCH MAYORAL CONTEST CRUSHING DEFEAT FOR ANTICONSCRIPTIONIST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, April 25. To-day's municipal elections were lifted right out of the commonplace by two very significant issues in the election of a Mayor and city councillors. The Labour "ticket" had thrown down the gage of anti-conscription, and the Citizens' Association had accepted the challenge, nominating man for man in the struggle. The eleotion, therefore, was a trial of strength between the anti-conscriptionists and the win-the-war party. The eleotion also created wide interest as being a bold experiment in proportional representation. Christchurch is the first city in New Zealand to adopt that" system of voting. Polling to-day is. very heavy, and it will be some days, possibly a fortnight, before the final results of the City Council election are known. ( . Later. , For the Mayoralty of Christchurch, Mr. H. Holland, the retiring Mayor, inflicted a crushing defeat upon Mr. J. M'Combs, M.P.7 who stood as an anti-conscriptionist. Bcanland (Citizens' Association), A. S. Taylor (Citizens' Association), and D. G. Sullivan (Labour) secured the required quota. H. G. Ell, M.P. (Independent Conscriptionist), J. A. Flesher (Citizens' Association), F. Burgoyno (Labour), W. Nicbolls (Citizens' Association), J. R. Kayward (Citizens' Association), and E. J. Howard (Labour) aro next in older in tho first preference voto. Tho Labour men were standing as anti-conscriptionists. SUBURBAN CONTESTS. Tho result of tho contest for, the Mayoralty of Woolston was that Mr. M'Gregor Wright (conscriptionist), > at one timo a prominent citizen of Wellington, defeated Mr. "C. Hill (anti-con-scriptipnist and Labour) by 659 to 303. The Lyttelton Mayoralty resulted in Mr. W. T. Lester 691, Mr. Foster 401. Eangiora Mayoralty—Jennings, 394; Banks, 205. DUNEDIN MAYORALTY. ' Creymouth, April 25. There was splendid weather for the elections. The poll is one of the heaviest ever taken. \ Tho Mayor, A. J. D. Lynch, was returned -unopposed. The four issues were: Nine councillors, four members Hospital and Charir table Aid Board, the half-holiday question, and a referendum on Sunday pictures. The main interest centred on the election of the council, which had been resolved into practically a straight-out poll on conscription versus anti-con-scription. . Wednesday half-holiday was carried. Incomplete returns show that Laoour cannot gain a single seat. Sunday pictures were toted out. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board returns are incomplete. INVERCARGILL. Invercargill, April 25. At the last election, Mr. Fletcher headed the poll.
