CANCER DEATH ROLL
MORTALITY GREATER. THAN FROM CONSUMPTION. "For the first time the mortality from cancer has definitely overtaken that from .consumption in this' country." This startling fact is reported by Mr. Douglas Macmillan, the hon. secretary, in tho annual report of the British Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer. At the present time, in England and Wales, it is stated that some 40,000 persons die annually from the scourge. ' A serious warning is given, in the report regarding tho effects of the war, it being.stated: "It is a matter of common knowledge that cancer very frequently develops at the site of a former scar or wound. Whatever the underlying cause of tho malady may be, the' lamentable "fact remains that as. a result of tho present unparalleled warfare, we shall have to face in the very near future a most serious increase in malignant growths in men, and especially .the men who have served their country in the field." An appeal is made for more funds which, it is stated; are urgently needed.
