A GENEROUS DONATION. '■ ; Tho quarterly mooting or the Wellington Catholio Education Board took place last night at St. Patrick's Hall. His Grnoo Aichbisiiop O'Shea presided, and there woro also present tho Rev. Fathers Hurley, S.M., Admr., Smyth, S.M., Admr., and Mnlioney, S.M., and Messrs.' Burko, Doherty, Hoskins, Davis, M'Phee, Giles, Stratford, and T. O'Brien. 'It'was announced that Mr. Mnurico O'Connor haddonatcd the sum of £500 to tho education fund. It was unanimously decided to write acknowledging tho great gonerosity of Mr. O'Connor, who has always been a true friend of Catholio ■ education, and lias always given the cause,..his' practical as well as his moral support, and is an instance of'what sacrifices. Catholics are prepared to make in providing Catholic schools,for Catholio children. Tho result of the Boxing Day picnic at-Karon Park added another £75 to the fund, 'which' was also considerably augmented by the sum of £200, being the net profits from the St. Patrick's Day celebrations.
,' Through. the. energy and'activity of tho Eer. Father Smyth, the sum' of £300 was paid off the mortgage on the Marist Brothers' residence, Hawkestone Street. The houso is now unencumbered. Similarly, through the efforts of the Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., •the mortgage on tho.Brothers', residence, King Street, ; was also extinguished.
Through the generosity of the Boulcott Street Educational Trustees, .the Bey. Father Mahonoy is enabled to carry, out extensive renovations to the 'Boulcott_ Street School. The alterations which are now being effected will cost £450. .
The Thorndon committee brought under the notice of tho board the necessity for founding 'scholarships at Catholic secondary schools, and informed the; board that as a result of a collection it was enabled to found three scholarships, tenable at St. Patrick's College., The board decided to take no action in the matter at presont, as the first object of tho board was to place Catholic primary schools on a sound footing. When that was completed the board would most cheerfully devbto its •energies- to the Catholio secondary schools. . The question of further accommodation for Te Aro for girls .was discussed, but nothing definite was decided upon. ; It ;was hoped, however, that negotiations would bo completed shortly, and a definite report placed before tho board-at its next meeting. St. Joseph's committee reported that tho sum of £75 was beinc expended on the Marist Brothers' School, King Street, in providing sliding doors as a protection from tho prevailing southerly winds. •
The "N.ft. Tablet" Company wrote and forwarded tlio necessary scrip for tlie parcol of shares generously donated to tlio. hoard by Mr. J. ,T, L." Burke. It was reported, liv the Hibernian delegate that the Hibernian Society were organising .a concert to celebrate the Tom Moore Anniversary'(Afay 28), tho proceeds of which were to be donated to tho fund.
The Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., was olcctcd a trustee in place of the .Very Rev, Father O'Connell, S.M., transferred to AVangamii.
