All Plimsoll-lined vessels may now load up to Indian summer at any time in any waters. This means an increase in the carr/ing capacity of British, vessels of between 4 and 5 per cent. The Plimsoll line, inaugurated by an M.P. of that name, consists of a circle on the midship bilge of all British vesEels with the following marlts: F.W., freßh water loading line; 1.6., Indian summer loading line: S.L., summer weather loadling line; W.L., winter weather loading line. The now order was authorised by the British Government War conditions have made the. action necessary. It will be far-reaching in its general effect on British commerce.
BEMABKABLB DEVELOPMENT. One of the interesting little incidents in the shipping trade since the outbreak of the -war has keen the rise of the firm of Brys and Gylsen, Ltd. Escaping "Trom Antwerp in a. tug before tho German occupation, with an immense quantity of gold, the principals established themselves in London. The company did not appear in Lloyd's Register for 1914 as a steamship owner, but in the 1915 Tolumeit appeared as the owner of 27 steamships, and in the volume isaucd last July as the owner of 35 steamships. Sincei then Tes-, sals have been added to the fleet, making tho total of 39. Many of these "were acquired from British owners.

ALEXANDER EEPLAOBS NIKAU. Owing to the Nikau having to undergo Annual overhaul it haa been arranged for the Alexander to take her running in tho Wellington-Nolson-Motueka, service for tBo wepk or so the overhaul will occupy. Tho Nikau leaves hero to-night as usual* and will remain in ' Nelson. The Alexandor leaves Nolson on Friday night in placo. of the Nikau, and will continue acoording to timo-tablo. The Alexander leaves Jiere at 7 p.m. on Saturday instead of at 2 p.m. as is usual. INCREASED FAR.E6. The Ngahdre should reach here on Burday next from Limestone Island and Napier with a part cargo of cement. She will, according to present arrangements, leave here on the following day for Wanganui and New Plymouth. From the latter ports she leaves for Greymouth. The Hinemoa, got • away yesterday for the southern lighthouses. She was -unable to work Karon Rodk, owing to the heavy southerly, and Mr. Fraser 'will probably visit the rock in a launch to replenish tho gas supply. The Rosamond has been delayed, and the vessel is now scheduled to leave.here at noon to-day. taking cargo for Bluff and Dunedin. After a', lengthy and stormy passage occuoying exactly 24 hours, the John arrived in port from Wanganui last evening, and berthed at No. 12 Queen's Wharf. Tho full force of the heavy sontherly gale yesterday made tho'trip down a most 'unpleasant one. Bho is timed to leave today or southern ports.
