ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
At the monthly meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society it was stated that.cock pheasants, hares, Oalifornian and Australian quail may be shot by holders of licenses from May 1 to July 31, 1917. Grey ducks, teal ducks, and black swans may ■be shot without a license between the. same dates! Paradise ducks and native pigeons ""are absolutely protected throughout the Dominion and may not be shot anywhere. The Minister of Internal Affairs' wrote .stating that, as opossums' were absolutely protected in the Wellington Society's distilict, there was no power to grant a sl\ort open season. If was decided to purchase one million trout mixrVl ova (850,00(1 brown, and 150.000 rainbow, from Hakataramea and Hotonia respectively) for the 1917 season.
Mr. J. G. Miller, tlio society's curator, at its Mostcrton hatchery, reported that be liad recently , , visited all the hatchery plants in the South Island and was satisfied that the society's hatchery and water supply were cmial to any. . The treasurer reported that though there was.an overdraft at the bank of •R6s'on March 31,'tlin msh assots and liabilities were practically equal.
