POLICE CASES
Mr! W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety, Julia Selina Scholtes was fined 55.,' in default .twenty-four • hours' imprisonment; and "William James Kidd was lined 10s., with the alternative of serving twenty-four hours' in gaol. ■ Louis Brough, a Harbour Board employee, was convicted and fined 40s„ in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment, for the theft of fish valued at lis. Brougli was in charge of the fish, which was stolen from a trawler in port. A remand' to Wednesday was made in a case against Charles Kemp ai;d Albert de Yale Dudley, charged with, on or about April 11, 'having broken and entered the dwelling-house of Nathan Phillips by night and stolen twelve rolled gold rings and one gold brooch, valued at .£5 55.. A similar remand was made in a- case 'in which Kemp was charged with ship desertion. . CIVIL CASES. DEFENDED CASES. Arthur C. Rose -proceeded against Wil-1 linm Collins, refreshment ro9ni_ proprietor, for the sum of .£5 for painting done. The' defence was that the price agreed upon was iC3, and judgment was given amount, with costs .SI 125.. Mr. J. Scott appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. H. ]?. O'Leary for defendant. The Public Trustee, for whom Mr. E. P. Hay appeared, sued Johij Henry Dillon, builder, of Palmerston North, to tccover- the sum of .£35 13s. Id., the amount of rates alleged to be due by defendant to the .Palmerston North Borough Counoil. The facts were stated to be that Dillon had ft mortgage with the Public Trustee and failed to pay the rates- due on the. mortgaged property. The amount was accordingly paid by the Publio Trustee. Judgment was given for nlaintiff for the full amount olaimed. ' Mr. W. G. Kiddell, S.M., dealt with a case in which the Inspector of Awards (Mr. G. H. Lightfoot) had proceeded against Horace J. Archer, draper, Cuba Street, to recover a penalty in respect of a breach of the section of the award governing the employment of apprentices. The Magistrate's judgment hail been appealed against to the Arbitration Court, which had remitted the matter to the Magistrate. A penalty of 20s. was imposed. Mr. C. H. Treadwell appeared for Archer. In the case of Arthur Palmer (for whom Mr. D. M. Eindlay appeared) v. Mark. Gilray (represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson), a claim for ill 3 16s. 9d., judgment w,-i3 given for ,£lO. Mr. L. G. B-eid, S.M., heard a case in which Thomson, Brown and East,_ Ltd., sued Joseph Perry and Alfred Norton, I builders, Lyall Bay, for .£4 10a., claimed
to be due by. defendants for t>en_ices Tendered in procuring in Jul;lJl6, a loan of <£450. Judgment was Riven for the full amount claimed, wifcU costs ;£3 13b. 6d. Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr. D. E. Hoggard for defendants, ' ■
