SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY
: EASTER .ACTIVITIES. Good Friday and Easter have been busy seasons at the Sailors' Friend So-' ciety. . , On .Good Friday a large number, of seafaring men sat down to tea jn the afternoon,- and in the evening there was: a, big attendance at the song-service. The soloists Were Mr. F. S. Pope, and the Misses V. Mueller, M. Clarke]. D. Jones. Miss Gawler was the accompanist.
A ; very fine roll of honour (painted by Miss Richmond), with vipws of the mountains, wireless station,'the waterfront, shipping, and the ro!l_. resting upon the sea, and the flags - of both navies was unveiled by Mrs. M. A. Williams. The large audience stood as Mr. O'Brien played "The Last Post" for those who among the forty on the roll'had given their lives for. King and country. Messrs. Baddeu and R. C. Renner were the speakers. Mr. Moore, Missioner, conducted the service, .and Mr. Edniansou took the lesson. ■
On Easter Day, harvest thanksgiving sisrvices were held, when many gifts were - received to beautify the church. The choir was augmented for tho occasion by the kindness ,of Madame Mueller, who sang ','1 Know That My Redeemer Livetli." Miss M., Gawler was pt the organ. • Mr. _ Moore, Missioner,' was the preacher for the day, his texts were Luke xii., 17, and 2 Cor. v., 1. The roll of honour was placed in the church, where it was much admired after the services. The engraving of the names was done by Mr. E. Macfarlane. , ' .
At the. soijg-service in the institute there was a very, full attendance when, after hymns chosen by the men, Mad tunc Mueller, the Misses D. Jones, Halliburton, and Holdsworth, and Messrs. Macfarlane, Cate, Bryant, Brown, and Culvcrwell rendered'quartets, etc. Tea was much enjoyed. On Easter Monday an all-day picnic was held in a delightful .kpo't kindly placed at the society's disposal by wellwishers. Mrs. M. A. Williams visited the merry party during the afternoon. Prizes were won by Messrs. Stubbins, Meehan, Alty, Pringle, Farley, Sebra-, ski;'and Morrison. "
The concert given by Mrs. H. Colpus in tile evening was delightful in every ■was? The following contributed items: Mrs. Alexander, Misses Cunninghame, Barr, and Tomlin, and Messrs. Edmanson, M'Farlane, Phillips, Cooper, and Boyd. Mrs. Colpers responded to cheers given for all who had made a red-letter day for the men in port.
