MURDER TRAGEDY IN TME SOUTH
GIRL ATTACKED BY A "ROUSTABOUT" -
CRIME ADMITTED

Christchurch, April 8, Midnight. About ten o'clock this morning a girl named Henrietta Foster, 18 years of ace, was. murdered l>y Charles Butler, a man of 40, at View Hill Station, ten miles from Oxford, North Canterbury. The girl's father is the caretaker at View Hill, and with his wife and two daughters went to church at Oxford, leaving Henrietta at the house. Butler, who was a- "roustabout" on the ■place, got a razor from his hut,, entered tho homestead kitchen, where Henrietta Foster was sitting on a sofa; darning stockings, and cut her throat from ear to ear. No other kind of interference was attempted with the girl. ■ ■ Butler unsuccessfully attempted to drown himself in a well. He was arrested, and admitted the crime, and was brought to Christchurch.
Butler has been well known in the Oxford district for some years. Hβ was a thrifty man, and had a large sum to Ms- credit in the bank.
