SOLDIERS SENTENCED
REFUSAL TO OBEY ORDERS
The decisions of the court-martial which tried four soldiers in Wellington on Monday last, on charges of. falling 'to obey lawful commands/ were an 7 nouueed on Thursday. . Each'of" the prisoners /was sentenced to 84 days' imprisonment with hard labour. .The'four men, who were compulsorily enlisted recruits, had declared that they did not regard thcrnselvbs'as soldiers, andso didnot fool impoiled to obey orders. Alexander Baxter was charged with having refused to work when ordered to do so by tho non-commissioned officer in charge of detention barracks. Archibald M'Coll Baxter, John Baxter, and William Little were charged .with having refused to change into detention clothing under similar, conditions.. The evidence at the court-martial' showed that the four men were 'committed to tho.detention, barracks, after, their arrival in camp, owing to insubordinate conduct, and that they then refused: to obey orders in the manner inafcated.
The,four men were found guilty, and ordered to I 'bo handed ovor to the civil authorities for confinement in His Majesty's prison for a teriiiof 84 .days. They, wore taken to prison under'military escort.
