BALLOT APPEALS

CASES HEARD IN WELLINGTON. Tho Third Wellington Military Service Board sat again in the old Parliamentary Buildings yesterday. Mr. W. H. S. Moorho.use presided, and supported by Mr. A. O'L. Considine and Mr. M. J. Mack. Captain Baldwin was the military representative. ' Tho Commissioner of Taxes (Mr: James Clark) asked for tho exemption of James Moriahan, senior clerk of the Taxation Department. Out of a staff of eighty-tiyo, tho Department had sent twelve men into the Forces, 1 while thirty-five yere cadets and girls. The work had increased, and tho staff had been working overtimo since July, 1916. Much confidential work had to bo performed by competent men. Tho appeal was adjourned sino die, the reservist to remain in'his present employment.

Oscar Keudall Greer (Mr. M'Grath), of Tawa Flat, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. His father arid mother were-advanced in years, and he,conducted the work of a farm. He also undertook the shearing of some 3000 sheep belonging to neighbouring farmers. The appeal was. adjourned sino die, appellant to sign a declaration undertaking to cngago only in essential work. '

Thomas William Burrell, farmer, of Wallaceville, was granted two months' leave, in ordor that lie might arrango for somebody'to take his place on his father's farm. Hβ stated (that the farm carried 800 sheep. His father was a widower, 82 years of age, and competent labour was very hard to , secure.

The appeal of, Karori Farquhar Spiers, dairy farmer, of Te Horo, was dismissed, Captain Baldwin undertaking, to obtain leave for the appellant until May 19, about the end of the milking season.

Matthew Boyd Guise, brass finisher, Rona Bay, made an appeal on the ground of public interest. He stated that there was a. shortago of brass finishers, and-that he was doing important work in connection with the manufacture of milking and shearing machines.

_ After hearing evidence on 'the question of whether or not an iron-finisher could do brass work, the board dismissed tho appeal, the appellant to have one month's leave in order that he might complete work in hand.

Notification was given in a recent Gazette of the existence of a commission which Las been established at the Ministry of Foreign Affaire at Paris, and which is instructed to compile records concerning Allied private interests in enemy or enemy-occupied territory (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria, or occupied districts in Franco, Itu6sia, Belgium, Luxemburg, Serbia, Montenegro, and probably Rumania). The commission's objects are: (1) To furnish parties interested, through the medium of competent' neutral Ambassadors, particulars regarding their property situated in enemy or enemy-occupied territory. (These particulars are sought only whon the applicant formally expresses his desiro t.herefor.) _ (2) To prepare records of claims whioh it would be possible to value subsequently.
