hour Board.- Accused stated that he was very drunk when ho went into tho shed. Ho pleaded for a chanco, and stated that ho would probably bo able to get work in the' afternoon. Tho Magistrate took a lenient viow, and ordered Black to. como up for sentenco when called upon. ALLEGED SHEEP STEALING. William Southeo and .David John Southee, fathor and son, were, charged that on March 31, at Akatarawa, they 'did steal one sheep, valued at £2, the property of some person or porsons unknown. A remand to' April 9 was granted on tho application of Inspector Marsack, ANTI-SHOUTING- • REGULATIONS.', Timothy Joseph Carrig, licenseo of tho Clyde Quay Hotel) for whom Mr. J. J*. M'Grath, appeared, was charged that ho did knowingly sell liquor,, in respect to which was an offence, namely, to one Frank Hedgman, with intent ■ that it should. be consumed by William Symons-contrary to the ,War Regulations. Hedgman and Symons, 'who are constables, went to the hotel on Saturday, February .17, iii' plain." clothes,and Hedgman called for.. dfinks and'paid for-.them. It was alleged by both constables that tlio licenseo had served them-.
The accused, whogavo evidence, stated that he had been licenseo of tho hotel for about twelvo months.' . It was never his practice to serve in the-pub-lic or four-penny bar on i Saturday night—lio was always, in. the private .bar. on that night: He usually left tho bar at 6.80\p.m. or..a little later, and-returned after 8 p.m.-. His wifo took charge of tho' bar during his absence. Tho barman on a Saturday night camo on duty'.'about 7.30 p.m. On the night in question the;barman, Patrick Doran,:- kid Mrs. Carrig/ivoro in tho public bar, where the constables were served. . • Doran,. who... had "sinco joined the Expeditionary Force, ad? mitted. having served tho constables. • Patrick Doran-said. that ho . was in the' public bar soon after 7.30 p.m. on the particular Saturday night. Mrs: Carrig was in tho bar ; with him ; the licenseo was in .tho private. bar and. had not been in tho public bar. at. anytime while ho (witness) was there: He knew most of the customers and remoinbered serving two strangers on the date in question. „ When tho constable and sergeant camo to tho hotel on the Tuesday - following,, the constable,. after looking .at witness,, said there. was-a- resemblance- between tho two men -(witness and tho -licensee)-. The sergeant, however, said there was no.likeness whatever. Edith-Carrig. wifo of the licensee,also cave, evidence. Tho Magistrate, in,-.recording a conviction, stated that'- the- evidence of tho constable 'was'plain and,clear, and lie preferred to believe them than the! witnesses for the-defence. 'A'fine of £5 was imposed, and at tho request of Mr. M'Grath the amount''w.as raised to £5 Is. to'allow of an appeal to tho,Supreme Court. FOUND ON LICENSED PREMISES; John Oscar..Sutherland and Robert Thompson were , charged that on Sunday, March 11, they ./were' ; found', on licensed -promises—the Princess/ Hotel —when tho samo was required- to be closed. Mr. 11. F: O'Leary appoarcd for defendants. The'evidence given by; the .police was that on a surpriso visit' On a Sunday the. two. men charged were on thb premises. Whbii questioned,' ono of theni said they were boarders.. John Oscar Sutherland said lie resided in Sydney Street, hut owing to tho illness, of his wife.,and',the neces'sity of getting someone ./in . to look after her, there was no room for liinv at homo;, and ho went to r tho'Princess ' Hotel and-'engaged "a Voom. ; "After spoaking to ..the'landlord,"' and "wHife" waiting to be given' a'.'room tho police canio in.' He was given a room and . then ho wont ; hack, to liis house and. got some inoiiey, for lie. had none, ivith him ■ at tho time. . He .slcp't at the hotel that night. Ho . went, to the Princess-Hotel -vvith Robert Thompson, tlio other defendant, who also stopped there that night. •' ' _ ' ' After hearing further ■ evidence tho Magistrate said it .was'a question whether the accused. 'wcre ,bona-fide lodg- 1 ers when .the .police came on iho sCeijo', and it was doubtful whether they-lad any intention of becoming lodgers .until then. Jle.recorded-a conviction and fined the accused 20s.' each costs, and allowed a- week in which to : find 1 the money.' . • . v: r - MAINTENANCE CASES. ~" ,' : '- The following • maintenance cases wero dealt with:—James Brown, who was in arrears with his payments-to tlio amount ■ of £13 10s., was ordered to pay the sum;duo by instalments of 10s. pei- week, or undergo one month's imprisonment. In the case of Walter Lace.y Colo the' arrears were reduced from £98. ls.' 'Bd!'to £60, and the defendant was ordered to paj ss: por ■ week.in reduction of the'dobt or serve ' 14 days in gaol. Frederick Edwards
was ordered to pay the sum. of £1 Cs. within one week, tho alternative being seven days' imprisonment. John Skipper was ordered to reduce, arrears totalling £3 10s. by weekly .payments of 10s., default being fixed at'seven days' imprisonment.
