COMMONWEALTH STEAMERS, i A paragraph. in the "Sydney Morning Herald,' March 29, says:—Correspondence between the Commonwealth AuditorGeneral, Mr. J. W. Israel, and the Federal Treasury indicates that the then Treasurer, Mr. Hires, authorised the Commonwealth. Bank to hold at the disposal of the Prime .Minister in London £5,M0,000 for the purchase of 25 steamers for the Commonwealth.

SHIPPING AND liABOOB. _ During the-month of March,' shipping in the port of Wellington has been , very brisk, and, taking into consideration that there have been some very large vessels here, it is probable that the tonnage for the, month has been a record one for the port. During the month 537 vessels en.tored the port, while 360 vessels sailed from here. Yesterday the'number of vessels in port was Again large, and consequently'there was a shortage of labour. This means that a number of vessels are being delayod. Those principally affected aro the colliers. There ere several Union Company vessels innort, including the Kimo, Kabapo, and Kamona-, whose departure will not be taken for a couple of days yet. They will load and be-back here again- very shortly after the holidays, and thero is every nrospect of .next Week being an exceptionally busy one. A good numher of vessels will arrive during the week-end, and for three days ont of four there will be very little work done. These vessels will all Jbe ready for work early in the week. • OANOPI7S AND HULK. ,The Westport Coal Company advise that tlio Oanopus will probably be loading at Wcßtport. to-day or to-morrow. She should, arrive to-morrow night or Thursday. The vessel will remain in port until early after the holidays, and will probably leave on Tuesday or Wednesday, taking ttio hulk Jubilee in tow for Auokland. Oar go will bo brought from Westport to Wellington, but no cargo for Auckland will bo received here. 1 MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Oapt. E. Harvey has come ashore from tho Queen of the South on holiday leave. Captain W. Brydcn, first mate, has taken charge of the vessel, and Mr. J. P. Scott has joined as first mate. Mr. A. A. Douglas has joined the Mapourika ns third engineer, replacing Mr. H. G. Isaac, who has como astoro. Mr. Tl. Young hss Joined the Kakapo as third male. The Hippie, is to leave here at 6 p.m. to day for Napier, Gisborne, and Akitio. Sho will probably get back, bete on Monday morning next. She will not leave on Tuesday as usual, but will sail on Wednesday. Tho Blenheim left last evening for Havelock and Pclorus Sounds. She is due back here on Friday morning. The Wootton, which arrived from Lyttelton on Sunday, left again last evening for Nydia Bay. At 'Nydia Bar she .leads timber for Kaikoura. Prom Kaikonr*. it Is probable that sho will go to Ploton to load sheep for Wanganui. Tho Government steamer Hmemoir left yesterday morning for the Oook Strait lighthouses. No definito programme has been fixed for the vessel, and she <rill visit whatever plßcos tho weather makes it possiblo to land at.. She will coma into port again on Thursday, and will stay here until after Easter, whou sho will go out to complete her calls. 1 The Oorinna's departure from. Dnnedln has been postponed, and 6he is now leaving tho southern port' to-day for Wellington. The Karamn.. whioh was to have left here for Auckland- has hod her running altored. The vessel left hero last evening for Westport. At the southern port she loads a full cargo for Wellington, and Is duo horo on Thursday. 6hi> leaves Wellington the same day for Auckland, taking general cargo. The Kamo. Kamona, and Kakapo are fixed to leave. -lic:e on Thursday. The. Kamo and Kakapo go to Qreymouth, wbilo the Kamona goes to'Westport.

l'ho sale of the schooner Korara, "which 86 previously mentioned is a. wreck at Tacking Point (New South Wales), realised £455.

After making two special trips between Wellington and Lyttelton this week with passengers, '.the Te Anau has been fixed to leave Lyttelton on Thursday next for Port Chalmers, where she will bo docked for annuel surrey and overhaul. Lately on account of two special- trlp3 away from New Zealand the To Anau's running in the Coast trade has been deranged, but she will probably enter it again afotr overhaul. The Ngatoro is fixed to leave Wellington on Wednesday for Greymouth.
