J7 D\yyor (Christchurch), P: A. Deyereux (Qbxjstchurch), W. G. Baird (Christchurch), W. R. Millier (Wellington), G. Miller (Wellington), *V. H. Pearce (Wellington), and A. W. Walters (Wellington). The men were required in view of the approaching annual balance and the difficulty of securing temporary assistance. ' Tho men were'granted* leave until June , 2.
Private James, farmer, H Company, 26th Reinforcements, was six weeks' leave in order that he miaht lease his farm and soil his stock. He .stated that he had been called up in tho third ,ballot .and sent into camp without having time to make arrangements for the management of his farm in > T ortli Auckland. His stock, as far as he knew, was at present unteridod. Hβ had failed to lodge'an appeal within .the prescribed time. ;
Private J. Jackson; B Company, 25th Reinforcements, asked for three months' leave on accq*u;jt of his wife's health. He was a voluntary recruit, with two. children. He had been in camp for two months, and had been in hospital a good deal himself.
Leave of absence for two months was granted:'.. ' ■ ~
■Private S. C. Jones, C Company, 24th Reinforcements, made a similar application, and was granted two months' leave. ! ■
Georgo Dennis, joiner, Hamilton Road, Kilbirnie, who had previously been , refused exemption, was further heard, and was granted leave until Juno 25, on the ground of undue hardship. The appeals of F. H. Devorall and, A. Matheson f shearers,;were dismissed, the. men failing to'appear. Further periods of exemption to May 1, 1917, were granted in the cases of Leslie Baker (locomotive fireman), Patrick Richard Ryan (railway signalman), and Frederick Henry Cunningham (locomotive fireman). The appeals were made by the Railway Department. The Union Steam Shipping Company appealed oil behalf of F. F. H. Hill, R. W. Elliott, W. J. Williamson; F. Pegler, J. Jeromson, M. Sullivan, and C. J. Gasquoine, marine engineers. All the men were employed on tho "company's steamers. Mr. W. A. Kennedy^' , on behalf of the company, asked that' these cases, and some others of a similar, character, should be adjourned until April 16, when he would be prepared to say, if necessary, what men could bo spared. The company was being pressed'by the 'Government to undertake, important work, demanding the services of a full staff of ongineers. The cases were adjourned accordingly,' the men to remain in their present employment in the. meantime.
The board will sit again to-morrow morning.
