The Hon. W. I>. 8. Mao Donald has gone to the South Island. The Hon: S. W. Russell will ho back from the north to-morrow.. A private cahlegram received from Honolulu yesterday announced , tho death there of Mr. C. A. Briggs.of Wellington, who letired from the management of' Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co., recently, and set out on a tour of the world: Mr. Briggs had been in Honolulu for four or'five weeks. No particulars have yet been received as' to the cause of death. A Press Association message from London states that the Rev. Campbell Morgan, who baa been appointed to the Congregational Church, Collins Street Melbourne, has indefinitely postponed his departure owing to the uncertain-' ties of travel.

Private R. E. Jones, of ike Eleventh Reinforcements, and a son of GaumoUlor R. H. Jones, of Petano, has, according to cabled advice received by his father, been accidaatally wounded at the front. Private Jones is a member of tho Divisional Signallers, and was wounded on February 25.

The death of Mr. John Gavan Duffy, which occurred in 'Melbourne on March. 8, removes a figure long conspicuous in Viotorian politics. He was the eldest ■son of the late Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, K.C.M.G., formerly Premier of iViotoria. He was bom in Dublin, October 15, 1844, and arrived in Victoria in 1859,' completing his education at tho Melbourne University. He had early experience in pastoral pursuits, but he decided a few years later to take up law. He subsquently_ entered public, life, and held Ministerial office m several Administrations, and -was the - representative of the Australian. Governments at the Postal Convention, at Washington in 1897. As. an' ardent Federalist, he took a prominent part in the meetings of Hie Federal Council of Australasia in 1883, and was chairman of the committee. ,• A widow, one daughter, and survive him. Mr. Jnstico Duffy is a. brother of the deceased. <J;

' - At the CkW Post Office on Monday, Mr." B. Willis, who has just-retired on superannuation, was presented with a. watch, suitably engraved, from the officers of the Department. Mr. A. P. Dryden, Chief Postmaster, made the presentation, and alluded to the fine work done by Mr. Willis during Ws' long and honourable career. Other officers in the service testified to the sterling Qualities of the willing officer.

Mt. George Scully, who lias arrived from America to mako arrangements' for another concert tour of New Zealand by the Russian musicians, the Cherniavskys, is at present in Wellington. Mr. Scully is a brother of Mr. Howard Edib, who was manager for the Cherniavskys when they were last in New Zealand.

The remains of the late Capfc. John a MaoDiarmid, N.Z.M.O. (one of the medical officers at Foatherston Camp, who died in Wellington on Sunday night after an operation for appendioitis), were accorded a military funeral yesterday afternoon. Hie cortege left the mortuary of Messrs. R. H. Wilson and Sons, Adelaide Road, at 2.30 p.m., headed by the Featherston Camp' Band, and proceeded to Karori -Cemetery, where the interment took place. The pall-bearers wer© four captains in the Medical Corps at Featherston, and the firing' party was provided from the camp. The service at the graveside was conducted, by Chap.-Capt. Gilbert. Amongst those present were SurgeonGeneral Henderson, K.H.P. (DirectorGeneral, of Medical Services), Colonel Purdy (Director of Medical Services), Major. N. Newcombe . (Adjutant, Featherston Gamp), Major Robertson, Capts. Lepper, Muliihs, and Spence, and Lieut. Johnson. The chief mourners were the deceased officer's father, Dr;. R. C. MaoDiarmid, of Huatly, deceased's widow, and his sister. Numerous wreaths were sent, including those from the following: Surgeon-General-Henderson, Medical Officers aad N.C.O.'s, Featherston Camp, Medical Officers Trvntham Camp, and Capt. and Mrs. Wilson, N.Z.F.A.

Dr. 0. IV Crossley, formerly Angli- ' can Bishop of ~ Auckland, has undertaken the office of chief commissioner ! and superintendent of the band of special service clergy whioh is being organised in the diocese of Llandaff. Dr. Crossley will .devote his whole time to these duties, and will, therefore,, vacate the benefice of Dinas _ Powis, Cardiff, to which he was appointed in 1914. ° ' ••

j: The death took place at the Auckland Public Hospital on Monday morning of Mr. Fred "W. Duval, who was well known inHheatrioal biroles in the colonies. The late Mr. Duval originally commenced as a clog-dancer in England. He arrived in' the colonies in 1866, and worked for Mr. John Bennett,, of the Thames, in 1867_. Ho made two trips to 'India; one in 1873 and the other ten years, later. jHp •was 68 years of age. ;
