BALLOTED RAILWAYMEN
_ TEMPORARILY EXEMPTED. The Third Military Service Board was engaged on Saturday morning in hearing appeals made on behalf of the Railway Department, Mr. W. H. S. Moorhouse presided, and with him wero Messrs. M. J. Maok and A. 0. Considine. Captain Baldwin was present as military representative, and Mr. John Bevin, District Traffic Manager, represented the Railway Department. There were appeals on behalf of thirty men in the Railway Department, the ground of tho appeals being publio interest. Those for whom appeals were lodged' were:—Stationmasters Robert Marshall (Matamata) and Alfred Allan Smith (Te Kuiti); railway clerks, Francis Henry M'Auley (Christenurch), John Lundon (Auckland); railway cadets, William Benson Pops (Riccarton), Lindon James Roberts (Hastings) ; railway porters, Victor Abbott (Marion), Thomas King (Christchurch), Edward M'Carthy (Christchurch, Denis Patrick Keogh (Balelutha), and Lawrence Frank Bate (Orari); storemen, John Fronch (Frankton Junction) and Thomas Edwin Powe (Christchurch); fitters, Andrew Russell (Taihape), James Christopher King (Mangere Bridge), and William Joseph Brain (Grey Lynn); engine-drivers and firemen, Charles Donglas Braidwood (Auckland), Robert Louis Buchanan (Frankton Junction), Henry Hans Christopher (Newton), Thomas Houghton Stephenson (Dunedin), .John Patrick Ryan (Frankton Junction), Cuthbert William Williebmbe (Wellington), Francis John M'Noill (Taumarunui), Cecil English (Parnell), and Charles Gordon Kirker (Frankton); cleaners and others, Charles Bullen (Grey Lynn), James Graham Campbell (Frankton Junction); surfacemen, Richard Cook (Onchunga), John Grady (Morrinsvillo), and Thomas Crawford (Tapanui). Tho appeals were adjourned to May 1, with leave from military service in tho meanwhile.
The appeal of George Selby, foreman carpenter, 173 Onepu Road. Lyall Bay. was adjourned 6ine die, with exemption from military service on the ground of undue hardship. The appellant stated that four of his brothers had enlisted, and in addition two other boys, who wero brought up by liis mother had also enlisted, and ono had been killed in action. When his brothers enlisted lir had > promised them that he would remain to look after their mother, who was more or less an invalid.
Tho apneal of John Scoringe, sanitary employee May Street, was dismissed, tho military representative undertaking to ohtain for appellant leave of absence until April 17. Tho appeals of Stephen Salter, telegraph instrument repairer and electrician, and of R. W. fiharkie, labourer, ].o Jacob's Place, WcUington, were.dismissed.
