The Queensland Minister for Lands (Mr. J]imter) h«s entered into an agreecnt with the Cairns Paper Pulp Syndicate whereby, in consideration of a strip of land along the coast south of Cairns, the company undertakes to manufacture pnper, and pay the Government a royalty of Is. on every ton sold. The paper is produced from such .grasses as blady, Chinese burr, and sida retusa, aud froin lantana, all of which are to be found 011 the area granted. The land runs along the coast near Cairns, from Clump Point to Trinity Bay—a fairly extensive area. The company agrees to produce 50 tons o! pulp per' month. hi the course vf his remark.*, Mr. Hunter said the company apparently hail made successful experiments, ns tho samples would indicate, and the outlook vfivs promising. Some years ago the Queensland Pine Co. contracted to manufacture paper from wood pulp in the Yarnunini district, and a. piccc of land (here was granted to theui 011 these conditions. Owing to some trouble the paper could not bo manufactured, and Mr. Hunter threatened to cancel tho agreement. Hwovor, an arrangement was arrived at by which the Queensland Pine Company agreed to pay increased timber royalties until they commenced to manufacture paper.
