Here are some examples of sales of ships, which have taken place since the on;break of war:—
One steamer which sold in 1910 for £3000 brought £47,000 during the latter part of 1916. Another which cost £26,000 when the builders delivered her .24 years ago sold in 1912 for £6000, and in the summer of "1916 brought £68.000. Still another, which changed hands in 1911 for £4400, was sold recently for £56,000. Announcement recently made by Lloyds of the prices realised on the sale of vessels during the second quarter of 1916 gives some further indication of the demand -for ships. In the case of "King," a vessel 'of 7300 tons cargo capacity, the price realised was £121.600, the ship having cost £45,000; the Tvnutsford, with 6500 tons cargo capacity, was sold in 1913 for £27,250; in February, 1916, for £76,000, and more recently for £97,400. Among other sales of steamers are noted the Robert Dollar. 8800 tons cargo capacity, built in 1911, sold in April, 1916, for £272.500; the Kirkfield, 8400 tons, built the same-year, was sold about the same, time for £156,000; and ■ the Bland Hall and Albert Hall, each 8250 tons, built in 1914. wero sold during the past quarter for £175.200 and £146,000 respec« tively. The Winnlield, 5800 tons, built iu 1901, was sold in 1907 for £21.700, in April, 1915, for £37,000. iu June, 1915, for £40,000, in December, 1915, for £55,000, and in June, 1916, for £75,000. A sailing vessel. thePesea, net tonnage 1493 tons, was sold in 1912 for £1940, and last summer for £21,400 ; the sailer Fingal, 2435 net tons, which was sold in 1910 for £3500, and in 1915 for £6800, brought • £43,000 in 1916; tho Dunsyre, 2056 net tons, sold in 1910 for £4200, changed hands during the, past quarter at £27.800; and the Freden. 1920 tons, sold in 1916 for £4600, .brought £37,700 in 1916. New boats are selling as high as £35 a gross ton, as compared with £10 a year and a half ago. Some very old sailing ships, which found little employment before the war, have brought as high as £20 a gross ton within the last few months. Even wrecks have been repaired, rendered seaworthy, and sold at handsome profits.
