POLICE CASES. •; Mr. L. G. Roid, S.M., presided over yesterday's sitting of tho Magistrate's Court. , Joseplius Tlioophilus Meyers, a seaman, was charged with having assaulted Aloxandcr Milno on the high spas. Tho evidence for the prosecution was that tlio defendant, who was not in the humour ' for work, hut rather for making trouble, hit the boilermaker with a shovol v and hit him in tho chest. The polico submitted that the defendant was responsible for the whole trouble, while Mr. P. W. Jackson, on behalf of the defendant, submitted that tho boilermaker was tho aggressor. His Worship took the view that tho story told by the prosecution was the correct version of the occurrence, and sentenced .Tosephus Tlieophilus Meyers to seven days' imprisonment. _ Isidore Jacobus, for tho sixty-fourth tiirm in his life, and tho eighth time within the last six months, stepped into the dock on a charge of insobriety. Another conviction was duly recorded. Inspector Marsack stated that as Roto Poa was full, tho defendant could not bo committed to that institution. His Worship imposed a line of 205., with tbe alternative of fourteen days' imprisonment. William Smith, thrice previously convicted of insobriety within the Gpace of six mouths, was similarly dealt with, whilo John M'Laughlan, once previously convicted within a similar period, was fined 10s., in default three days', imprisonment. Catherine May Smith was fined ss. for insobriety, and £3 for using obscene language.'' The alternative in tho first case was fixed at three, and that in the second at fourteen days' imprisonment.

For using obscene language in Douglas Strept, Richard Howard was fined 40s. A fortnight in gaol -iras the alternative penalty His Worship 6xed. Louisa Tierney received a sentence of three months' imprisonment for keeping a house of ill-famo. On a charge of using obscene language, she was fined 405., . with tbe alternative of spending a fortnight in gaol. Charles Scott, Thomas Penn. and Itioiiard Evefct. three seamen, charged with being absent from their vesßel without leave, were convicted and ordered to forfait a day's pay. Percy Eriokson, who at Milton had stolen a motor-cycle by the simple expedient of taking it out "for a trial run," entered a plea of guilty,, ami was committed to the Supreme Court, for sentenco. On further charges oF theft and breaking, entering, and theft, Eriokson was remanded for a week. Charles Walker, chargpd with stealing jewellery from the Empire Hotel, was remanded for a week.
