PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA

The ninth annual meeting of the AVellington Professional Orchestra was presided! over by Mr. C. Norman..

The annual report stated that the orchestra had beon kept up to full strength during tho soason, enabling work to bo adequately performed. Attendances at rehearsals had also • kept well up to the standard, and it was hoped that members would realise the neeossity for regular and punctual attendance, so that tho coming • season might be as successful, musically, as the last. During the season , ton concerts were given. The . number of pieces performed was 55, of. which seven were repeated. . Performances were given of eight new works not previously heard here. Some 30 members also paid a visit to the Victoria Hospital and rendered selections, which were much appreciated by the wounded soldiers. The orchestra on the occasion was. assisted 1 ' byj Mifcs Margaret Jewell. Special thanks have been tendered to Mr John Prouse and-Mr Hamilton Hodges for their valuable assistance as vocalists, and to Mr. Walter Fuller for donations of music.- "It is gratifying to note (states the report) that, whereas last year's working resulted in a loss of £5 3s. 7d.. the present year has realised a profit of £21 ss. This must in a measure be ascribed to the extra concert given on Good Fridaw night, which gave a ■ profit of £15 165." The- assets show an excess over liabilities of £54 7s. 7d.

It was announced that- the current season would commence with a contort on Good Friday night. Tho first rehearsal was arranged for Sunday next. Tlie question of the appointment of a conductor was postponed until then, as it was not known whether Mr._Horb.ort Bloy would ba able to continuo his association with the orchestra. Mr. 11. Moschini was appointed deputy conductor, hut the election of a committee was postponed.
