MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE CASES., Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided over yesterday's sitting of tho Magistrate's Court. For insobriety, Martha Scott, James Cameron, and James Henley wore oach fined ss. John Joseph Marron, who had behaved in a disorderly fashion whilo under the influence of liquor, was fined 10s. An old man named William Wallace was remanded till to-day on' a charge of possessing insufficient lawful means of support. MAINTENANCE CASES. In a maintenance case, Cecil James, who . had allowed tho arrears to mount up, was ordered to pay £1 a week and solicitor's foe, or servo fourteen days' imprisonment. ,Jessie Aspen was granted a separation and guardianship order against her husband, Alexander Aspen. Dofondant was ordered to pay 10s. a week for his wife's maintenance and ss. in respect of each of tho children, In seeking an order for separation, ouardianship, and maintenance against Tier husband. Myrtle .Newman alleged, cruelty, which, in tho Magistrate's opinion, was not borne out in _ evidence. The application was dismissed. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the complainant, and Mr. J. J. M'Grath for defendant. CIVIL CASE. Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., delivered his reserved judgment on a claim by John James Boyd, builder, for possession of "Bay View," Kilbirnie Crescent, together with rent from January 22 to tho date of hearing, viz., March 5. ifr. D. M. Findlay appeared for tho plaintiff, and the defendant, George Everitt, carrier, was represented by Mr. H. F. Von Haast. At. the hearing it was contended ,-for tho defence that there was a tenancy, and no agreement for its duration. There was, therefore, a tenancy from month to month, bait in this case the plaintiff had given only a week's notice.- The Magistrate, however, hold that there was a weekly tenancy. It was also submitted by Mr. Von. Haast that the tenant was entitled to the protection of'tho AVar Legislation Amendment Act, 1916, but His AVorship said that the tenant had lost any such title in committing waste by allowing the passago of heavy wagons to damage the property. Defendant's third contention, that tho'landlord, by, accepting rent after proceedings had been taken waived tho notice to quit, was upheld, and itTie plaintiff was nonsuited. Leave'to 'appeal'was granted. \

ARBITRATION COURT

\Tho Arbitration Court concluded its sittings in Wellington yesterday, His Honour Mr. Justico Stringer presided, and sitting with him were Messrs. W. Scott and J. A. M'Cullough. The Court's last business was. to deal -with applications • for awards terminating disputes already satisfactorily settled beforo the Conciliation Commissioner. '• - ;

On the application of Mr. D. It. Kennedy, for the Furniture Workers' Union, an award was made to cover the trade in the .Marlborough district, the parties having agreed as to. ..terms. The Court merely ratified tlie agreement.

The typographical dispute and the lithographers and lotterpross machinists'- dispute were terminated by tho making of Dominion awards. Awards wero made in the bookbinders and paper-rulers dispute', one to cover Wellington district, and another to cover all the.rest of the Dominion. All those wore matters in which the parties consented.

Judgment went by default in tho case Philip D. Hargreaves v; Frederick H. Robjohns, a claim for moneys' alleged to bo duo under a mortgage.
