FIRE BRIGADES' CONFERENCE
By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, March 12. The annual the United Fire Brigades' Association opened at Balclutha to-day. The report stated that the excess of assets over liabilities was £392 14s. 7d.. against £576 10s. 4<l. Inst year. The membership was now 135 brigades. Out of less thnn 3000 members. 1030 had enlisted and 87 had been killed and 116 wounded. The conference decided to appoint a deputation to wait on tho Minister of Internal Affairs urging that a further effort be made to obtain financial assistance from the insurance companies towards tho upkeep of all brigades whether under Fire Boards or not.. It was decided to bring before the_ Efficiency Board the question of assisting the Government in the enlistment, of eligible members without unduly weakening tho strength of brigaded. A motion was carried disapproving any brigade superintendent, ap. pealing for exemption of any member eligible for active service.
