In an interview, Dr. Bedford, who went Homo on a troopship as a representative of the Y.M.C.A., said: — "I saw graft tijat must have robbed tho State of hundreds of pounds. Stores on the ship, the propertv of the State, were sold to tho soldiers and the money taken by some employees of tlio snip who had access to and the handling of the provisions. Fresh water was one of tho provisions 6old. Freshwater baths were* actually sold at 4s. per bath. Four buckets at Is. ; pur bucket; Fruit cakes were Bold, and in one case £40 was handed over' by a man representing a group of men. I have furnished a ■ statement of this. to Sir James Allen, and have -written a statement signed hy twenty-four sergeants. Not only is tho State robbed, but tho men are charged more than the stuff is worth. I suggested that a trial might be made of enlarging the canteens and selling afternoon tea, fresh, cakes, ":and supper,. and the Minister is.' considering the ■' whole -thing." ~-
