MOTOR TRAFFIC

. ITS GROWTH IN WELLINGTON. It must be patent to everyone how very rapidly tlie_ motor traffic of Wellington City is increasing. Each month sees a greater -proportion of motor vehicles on the road, both for business purposes and ploasuro, or convenience, and a slight lessening of hoi'se-drawn traffic. The figures available aro interesting. Since March last the- number of new vehicles registered here was slightly, over 1000. The total number registered in Wellington is 3212, of which 1573 are motor-cycles and 1639 cars. Approximately 85 taxi-cars are employed in : service in the City, and there are 130 motrir vans and wagons encaged in various businesses.

The total number of private drivers' certificates of competency issued to date is 913, of wjiich. 300 have been issued during past seven months. I.n this regard a word of warning is necessary. It is well known to the council authorities that there are numbers of private drivers who havo no certificates, and it is the intention to tako action against such people in the near future. Drivers of any experience have no occasion to , be without certificates. They mer.ely- liave to show their proficiency to'handlo their cars over a given route to the satisfaction of the inspector, and having done this the payment of one shilling entitles them to a certificate, which they should always carry. This provision is necessarv for the safety of the public as well as for the of other motorists and drivers of other vehicles using_ the. roads. A proof tbjit the tost is absolute!v necessary exists in the., fact that during the last seven months 49 applications for certificates have been refused owing to inefficient driving, defective eyesight, or other phvsicp.l defects. Drivers of commercial motor vehicles have been tested and passed to the number of 308-to date, including 103 new drivers since March last.
