VEGETABLES INSTEAD OF FLOWERS
Sir—Pormit mo to call attention to an omission in your excellent report of Dr. Newman's lecture. I saw no mention of one very important thing the lecturer told us. As a result of this cruel war there is every probibilit" of a world famine owing to the large numbers of men engaged in it and th'e devastation of the lands in which the> struggle is being carried on. ' In view of this he seriously advised us all tocultivate every available piece of land,, and to plant potatoes and other vegetables in our _ gardens instead of flowers. In this practical way all can: help to meet the expenses of highlypriced food. Eden Philpotfc in one of his books says that it requires a greatdeal of intelligence to take good advice, so it is honed that now "Wellington citizens will give proof of their intelligence by following the advice sokindly given by Dr. Newman.—l am, . MARTHA. [Our correspondent is mistaken in thinking that we did not miblish Dr. Newman's remarks on this subject. They were fully reported in our' columns.]
