THRILLING STORY OF THE BATTLE OF JUTLAND
(Hoc. March 6.J5.35 p.m.) London, March 5. A thrilling story of the Battle of Jutland has now been fully rovcaled in tho Admiralty's announcement of a. posthumous award of the Victoria Cross to Commander Jones, of the destroyor Shark, which led tho division of dostroyors in the attack on tho enemy's battle cruiser squadron. Tlio Shark was disabled by two shells. Another destroyer oamo between tho Shark and tho onomy and offered to assist Commander Jones. Ho rofused, saying that if he remained lio would almost certainly bo sunk. Then, though wounded in tho leg, ho helped to man tho after-wheel and subsequently, when tho forecastle and aftor-gun's crew had been blown away, ho assisted in.keeping the midship gun in action.—Renter. Tho Shark all tho time ,waa under the heaviest firo. A shell amputated Commander Jones's leg above the knee, but he continued to command his gun crew, despite his agony. Jones, noticing that tho ensign was not properly hoisted, ordered another to bo raised, and tbpn, seeing that his ship was doomed, ordered his crew to don the Jifebelts. Almost immediately tho Shark was torpedoed and sank. Jones was drowned.
Tiio survivors who wore picket! up were awarded Distinguished Servico Medals.—Renter.
