BAY OF ISLANDS SEAT

MR. STEWART'S RESIGNATION,

Respecting the resignation of Mr. W. Stewart, M.P. for Bay of Islands, the Kawakawa correspondent of the Auckland "Herald" states:—Several months ago Mr. Stewart desired to place his resignation in the hands of the Speaker, but was prevailed upon to withhold it until the return of the Prime Minister. The delay that has • occurred in holding the Imperial Conference, however, has made tho date of Mr. Massey's return uncertain, and under these circumstances Mr. Stewart considers that it is only justice to his constituents to resign now, so' that a. successor may be able to take his seat).at the opening of Parliament in June. In his announcement to the electors cfc. the district, Mr. Stewart states that on being pressed to contest the_ vacancy at the by-election his decision was necessarily given hurriedly. Very soon he found that to do justice to his position, and to give the attention: necessary to the many wants of the electorate, it would practically necessi- > tate his abandoning his own private : business. Realising this, he had decided to retire from politics.

Mr. F. H. Phillips, who for ninny years was Parliamentary interpreter, j informs us that he has received a,j strong requisition to contest the Bay,of islands seat. Mr. Phillips states; that it is his intention to visit tins; Bay nf Islands before coining to a deoi- ■ sion in the matter.

MR. VERNON REED TO STAND: By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 6. Mr. Vernon Reed announces his candidature for the Bay of Islands seat' resigned by Mr. W. Stewart.
