KEEN INTEREST IN THE CAMPAIGN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, March 6. As election day comes nearer the Hawke's Bay campaign grows keener. Public interest has not abated one hit as a result of the retirement of Mr. A. L. D. Eraser, who is holding the meetings on his itinerary, but is appealing for support for Sir John Findfay, instead of himself. Mr. S.imson advertises an invitation to tho Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald to attend his meeting to-morrow night to defend himself against a statement made Try Mr. Simson as regards tho Minister's methods at tho Liberal convention. • The Minister lias replied to the challenge by making a statement in the advertising columns- of the Press.. ■
Sir jolin Findlay, replies to to-night's critics ill his second speech at Hast-' ings to-morrow night. "Whilst Mr. Simson is Addressing his constituents at tho Municipal Theatre the Hon. AV. D. S. Mac Donald and Mr. Fraser will ho addressing a mass meeting at the Princess Theatre on Sir John 'Findlay's behalf.
Public opinion varies as to what the result will be.
The- returning officer at Hastings lias received advice from Wellington that Mr. Eraser's withdrawal cannot ho officiallv noticed, as it was not made within tho legal time. Mr. Fraser, therefore, is still officially a candidate, though he advises his supporters to vole for Sir John Findl?,y. and any votes credited to him will 501 1)9 informal.
