VIVIAN STREET TRAFFIC

Sir,—An accident a few days ago, in which a boy of six years lost an arm and leg, occurred in almost tho .same i place as a fatal accident to a small boy I a year or so ago. My reason for writ- i ing is to bring to the notice of our civic authorities the great danger young children run in the thoroughfare, ana tho advisability of taking action to ■minimise the danger. "Where there is one accident that is really serious, there are very many that just escape seriousness. This locality, sir, is largely residential, and on Saturdays, espeoially when the children are not at school, Vivian Street and the streets nearby are their playgrounds. The nearest «pen spaos is the Basin Reserve, where a handful of cricketers take possession. In my opinion "these cricketers should give up the Basin Reserve entirely to the .children. ' I hop© tho authorities of this city, townplanners, and others will hasten the day when right angle corners of our narrow streets will be rounded off and verandah and telegraph ,posts done away with. If there is a landlord of Te Aro who will donate a children's play area, his name would long be revered by our future citizens. I am afraid it is useless to mention the need to our city councillors, as they would reply that in time Te Aro will not be residential. Meanwhile, I hope that drivers of all vehicles will specially remember that hundreds of small children' in tho neighbourhood of Vivian Street must of necessity play in the streets. A by-law might be enforced to stop children from running behind" vehicles, and school teachers asked to explain this by-law to the children, also school playgrounds in tho city mado attractive aud kept open for tho children, after school and on Saturdays.— I am, etc., IMPRIMATUR.
