INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE SETTLED,
Tho disputo between' tho Bookbinders' Union and the Master Printers .and Bookbinders' Association was settled at a conference of representatives of tie parties on Saturday. Previously a conference before the Conciliation Commissioner had been held, hut no agreement was reached, and the case was referred' to the Court. By agreement, however, an<ther coulV." ence was arranged for Saturday, am Mr. W.'H. llaggor (.Conciliation Commissioner) presided. Messrs. W. Burns and James Fleming represented the union, and Messrs. L. T. Watkins and Hugh Douglas the employers. A complete settlement was made, and the terms of it will be referred to tho Arbitration Court for confirmation. Tile Union secured a war bonus of ss. per week on the minimum wage prescribed in the expiring award, and the now award is to run for three years. Important amendments were made in the clauses governing. -the employment of apprentices. 'Another new clause provides that returned soldiers partially disabled may obtain under-rate permits. Provision is made for piecework under restrictions. Prico' work may be introduced in any factory provided the employer and the union agiee, and provided the wages are not less than 15 per cent, moie than time rates. Wages, hours, and other essentials aro'as in the old award.
It is hoped that the new award will come into force on April 2. A vote of thanits was passed to Mr. Haggar for presiding on the Saturday afternoon.
