A NOVEL SUGGESTION
BOROUGH COUNCIL AS FARMERS*;
Mr. N. L. D. Smith submitted by; lotter to last night's meeting of the Onslow Borough Council a proposal that tho council nndertako the ploughing of private, or other lands within tho borough for tho production of potatoes, or other crops. Tho writer urged thafcthe matter was one of national import* anco in the present crisis. If the borough could sec its way to adopt his suggestion tliero would bo no lack oi! customers. The borough might undertake to cultivate a patch itself, aiict similar action might be taken by sticli bodies as churches, etc.. the object be* in" in every case a patriotic one. The Mayor said tho matter resolved itself into ii suggestion that the council procure implements for the cultivation, of land for any who desired it._ It was a question whether tho council, howover, had tho power to undertake sucH work. Personally, lie. thought that pos* sibly it hud the power. Councillor L. A. Browne said the proposed expenditure might be. illegal, anil tho council might bo called upon to ro i'und the money, lie moved that the council inform Mr. Smith, while thank-"; in}: him for his suggestion, that th£ : matter was beyond its province. Tho motion was carried.
