WATERSIDE WORKER KILLED
FALLS DOWN SHIP'S HOLD.
An accident which resulted in the deatbij of a watersido worker mimed Alfred, Hayward occurred on board tho Manuka shortly before 10 o'clock last evening, Work" oil tho vessel had practically ceased, and the hatches wero being goti ready to put on. Hayward, who was; partly supported on part of the hatch!! covering, was leaning over the edgo to catch a hook when the hatch covorin? moved, and Hayward, a man' of about 55, fell lead foremost into tho liole. Thn hold was practically empty, and the fall was one of about forty feot. Hβ wan apparently killed instantly. Tho police, the Harbour Board ambulance, and Dr< Young, were immediately telephoned for, and the doctor arrived on the wharf by tho time the man had been got out oS tho hold on to the wharf. He could do*; nothing besides pronounce life extinct, Hayward was a very well-known member of the Waterside Workers' Union, ancl iras regarded as a most" temperate and; careful man. He leaves a wife and founj children.
