MILITARY SERVICE ACT
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RESOLUTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, February 28. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce is sending tho following letter to Sir James Allen on the question of the operation of the Military Service Act, which was before tho quarterly meeting of members held to-day:—"The unanimous feeling of the meeting was in the direction of assisting to win the war by all means in our power. At the same time the general feeling was that more mature consideration should be given to men drawn in the ballot who are in tho production of foodstuff's hut whoso holdings are so email that they cannot engage substitute labour, and whose conscription would entail the loss of their equity. It was felt that the best interests of the Empire would be perhaps conserved by retaining and encouraging such men to continue their operations, and should it be necessary to set them back in the ballot my committee urge you to fully consider this matter, and in dealing with it assure you of its willing support of suoh measures as are considered imperatively necessary."
