BIG LIST OF PETTY CASES
At tile Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. L. 0. Iloul, S.il., presided, and dealt with the follou'iug cases:—Jivn Grell pleaded guilty to loitering iu Sydney Street for immoral purposes, and was sentenced to .a mouth's imprisonment. An old-offender named Hose Smith was convicted of being a rogue und a vagabond in that she was found by night in an enclosed area, No. i! 8 Mulgrave Street. She was lined 205., the alternative being seven days' imprisonment. For insobriety, live first offenders were convicted and discharged. John Pullar, who was found helplessly drunk on a public road, was ordered to pay 17s. (id. medical expenses, in default to serve three days in gaol. Sidney Tuwanga was convicted and discharged on a charge of assaulting William Dorricott, tho Magistrate characterising the assault as, a trivial affair. A fine of 10s. was imposed on Charles Henry Hart for assaulting the licensee of a city hotel, and for being found drunk 'he was convicted and discharged. .lesse Underwood, 75 years of age, was charged with disorderly behaviour in Courtenay Place, while intoxicated. The defendant protested that he had never .been in a hotel in his life. His record, however, showed that 'he had been previously convicted of disorderly behaviour. Underwood was fined 205., iiii default seven days' imprisonment.. For stealing a bottle of stout from a steamer, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Co., James Cullen was lined 10s., tho alternative beiug seven days' imprisonment. . Reginald H. S. Cording and Frederick John Couper pleaded guilty to the theft of three bottles vinegar, three bags dessicated coconut, -Jib. cocoa, and 16oz. bis 7 cults, the property of George Gilmour. Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared for accused, and asked for lenient treatment. The accused were fined 20s. each, in default to. serve seven days in gaol. ■ DEFENDED CASES. Eana Bogwan pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mick Arthur Stockwell. After hear.ing the evidence, the Magistrate dismissed the case. '~.., John Coyle, for whom Mr. O Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to assaulting Horace Willard. Mr. O'Leary pleaded for leniency, and pointed out that an apology had been tendered, aad any damage or costs would be paid, lno accused was convicted and discharged. A fine of 405., with costsi Us., in default seven days' imprisonment, was the penalty imposed on William Haydcn for. using obscene language. : For breaking his prohibition order, John Hyde was fined 405., the. alternative being 14 days' imprisonment. BY-LAW CASES. Harold Boon, for failing to attach a number to his inotor-cycle, was ordered to pay costs 7s. , For-sweeping dust across tho footway in Manners Street, Henry Leader was ordered to pay costs 7s. . Arthur William Scoullar was convicted of failing to. stop his motor-car in Cuba Street when requested to do so -bj » constable, and was fined Ms. am costs 75., in default three days' imprisonment. ANTI-"SHOUTING." John Tagnoy, barman of the Koyal Tiger Hotel, was charged that ho supplied liquor to Edv>ard Alexander Kruser a person under 21 years ot ago, contrary to the War Iterations, also with permitting John Lavigue to treat luu--6 Mr. O'Leary appeared for tho accused. Aftor hearing the evidence tho Magistrate fined Tagney 60s. and costs lis., in default 14 days' imprisonment for permitting "shouting," -and convicted and discharged him on tho other charge. OTHER CHARGES. William Ham was charged with loitering in Mercer Streot for tho purpose of betting, contrary to the provisions ot the Statute. Mr. T. Heave, who appeared for tho accused, argued that an actual bet having been made must bo ?wcdliefore a man could bo-charged with loitering for the purpose of betting. Decision was reserved. „ „ Thomas Parker, for whom Mr. H. I'. O'Leary appeared, was charged with, the theft of a bag of malt, of the value of £3, the property of the Central Brewei} Company, Auckland.. Chief Detective Boddam slated that a carter named Archibald M'lntyre took a load of 2a sacks of malt from tho Queens Wharf to tho Lambton Railway Station. While the cart vtas • passing Bunny Street, four sacks fell off, and the accused was observed to pick up one bag and put it on an express, which was driven to his liome. Whon approached by Constable Burnett for an explanation he stated that a man had put the malt on his cart and then walked away. . After hearing the evidence tho Magistrate dismissed' the case. It appeared that the man who had placed the bag on defendant's cart was under the impression that' it belonged to defendant, it was, said the Magistrate, a simple mistake,, and there was no stain on tho. character of the defendant. The Inspector of Factoriesi (Mr. G. H. Lightfooß proceeded.against Bvng, Hams and Co.,' Ltd., for failing to attach the prescribed label to certain goods which had been put out to be manufactured. A conviction was .recorded, fine of lfls., with 7s. costs, imposed. • Mr. A. Vt. Blair appeared for the defendants. CIVIL CASE.' • '„ Mr W- G- Eiddell, S.M., heard the case brought by Headland and Robinson, for whom Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared, to recover from Dr. Faulke the sum of .£4B 12s. 7d. for materials alleged to have been supplied and repairs to two motorcars. There was a counter-claim for alleged faulty workmanship and damages totalling .£95 1,35. Mr. E. C. Levvey appeared for Dr.: Faulto. After a partial hearing the case was adjourned for a week.
